Mary Harron to helm WICKED LOVELY
Shortly after her feature debut I SHOT ANDY WARHOL, Mary Harron came onto the Hollywood scene with AMERICAN PSYCHO. She hasn’t done much with film since then, but she has been working in television with episodes of acclaimed shows like Big Love, The L Word, and Six Feet Under to her credit. Now she’s looking to tackle the silver screen once again in a much more mainstream fashion than before.
Deadline Hollywood reports that she’ll be directing WICKED LOVELY, based on Melissa Marr’s novel of the same name, for Universal. Kimberley Peirce, director of the Oscar-winning BOYS DON’T CRY, was set to take the helm, but for whatever reason negotiations fell through; EDWARD SCISSORHANDS scribe Caroline Thompson wrote the screenplay.
The film focuses on Aislinn, a 17-year-old who must choose between mortal love and a Faery king. Now that Harron is on board, this could serve as her big break into mainstream features, much like Catherine Hardwicke with TWILIGHT. There’s also the possibility of four more features at the moment, given that WICKED LOVELY performs well, as there are four more novels in Marr's series.
