Mastodon scoring JONAH HEX
According to Pitchfork, Atlanta metal band Mastodon will contribute to the scoring of the upcoming JONAH HEX film, starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox. This will mark the band's first foray into film scoring. It's interesting to see Mastodon moving into this type of commercial work, considering that the band's four albums have all been pretty conceptual in execution. For instance, their latest release, "Crack the Skye," focused on astral projection, and their debut, "Levithan," was loosely based on Moby Dick. This is not just another band that typically churns out hits to bang over action-packed gunfights or tinkle over emotional outbursts (see: Linkin Park, The Fray, etc.); this is a critically acclaimed heavy metal outfit with a rabid fan base.
The Mastodon boys have previously allowed their music to be included in video games, however, and did write the opening song for AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE COLON MOVIE FILM FOR THEATERS. But scoring? This may be the obvious pun, but this is going to rock. Pitchfork also reveals that frontman Brent Hinds will have a cameo in the film. If he goes up against Brolin's Hex, I think it will be one epic gun-slingin' battle royale.
JONAH HEX is based on the DC Comic of the same name, and features Brolin as our titular antihero. Set in the late 1800s, Hex battles an army of zombies, all while being one badass motha of a bounty hunter. I can only guess how many zombies he will take down, and how awesome a Mastodon score will make that slaying sound. JONAH HEX is set to hit theaters on June 18, 2010. We're still waiting on the trailer, but refresh your memory with the first poster HERE.
