Michael Mann directing GOLD, created by Paul Haggis
With his upcoming HBO horse racing series, Luck, looking to premiere sometime relatively soon, director Michael Mann has added yet another film to his ever-growing slate, and apparently it sits right at the top.
Deadline is reporting that Mann is set to direct a new film, entitled GOLD. Developed by Paul Haggis, the film is described as “a contemporary TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE” style project, one that follows a group of prospectors and speculators “involved in the chase for gold.”
Written by Patrick Masset and John Zinman, the story itself is being held under lock and key, but what we do know is that Mann is producing with Haggis and their respective Forward Pass and Highway 61 banners. Production is planned to start in late 2011.
Personally, as a fan of Michael Mann’s work, I do have to hold my breath a bit, as Haggis is not quite the great writer one would hope would be behind a film like this. This project joins Mann’s long-talked about Robert Capa biopic and AGINCOURT project, but this appears to likely be the director’s next film. Polarizing scribe be damned, this is definitely quite an interesting project.
