WB sure as hell like to announce their news at the most random of times.

Coming late in the afternoon on a Sunday (following both the announcements of who will play Superman and Lois Lane, also landing on the final day of the week), the studio has not only officially titled the upcoming reboot of the Superman franchise, set to be helmed by Zack Snyder, but has also given us a villain.

Deadline is reporting that Michael Shannon, who has been linked to the role of the evil General Zod for quite some time, has been officially cast in the role, making him the villain of the upcoming film, MAN OF STEEL.

Snyder has stated that the character of Zod is “not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t.”  Zod has been a rumored baddie for this film since it was first announced, so this should in turn make quite a few fans of the franchise really, really happy.

Personally, while I’m not huge on it being Zod (I’ve always wanted to see a Brainiac on the big screen), I think they really could not have done better than Shannon for the role.  He’s a fantastic actor, and one that has the perfect physicality for a role of this nature.
