Mickey Rourke to star in/produce biopic on openly gay rugby star, Gareth Thomas
Very few careers are ever truly rebooted quite like Mickey Rourkes.
One day he’s known as an actor who wasted any and all of a massive amount of potential, and the very next he’s thrust into a world of Oscar nominations and mega superhero villain roles. Well, now it looks like the actor is set to head into a new territory- the sports film.
According to The Daily Mail (via The Playlist), Rourke is in talks to play gay British rugby star, Gareth Thomas, in an upcoming film. The two recently had dinner, and apparently, the film is in the very first stages of production.
Thomas is currently one of the only athletes on any sort of major sport team who is openly gay, which in today’s landscape, is a story ripe for a film. It’s actually, unlike many sport narratives, a really compelling tale as he’s not only well known for that, but he’s also a beloved rugby talent. Now, it’s doubtful that Rourke will star in the film, but he looks to have some sort of hand on the project, as either a supporting character, or on the production side as say a producer.
Rourke does have a rather busy slate, so the producer side seems more likely. More on this film as it comes.
