You have to be a more cynical man than I to dislike the Muppets. Jim Henson’s creations have been around for over fifty years and they are not going anywhere anytime soon, except to the big screen.

THE MUPPETS, a new film starring and co-written by Jason Segel began filming in late October and casting rumors have been flying around ever since. Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, and Rashida Jones have been officially cast in the film, and strong rumors indicate that Paul Rudd will provide the voice for Gary’s (Segel) Muppet friend Walter. An odd assortment of actors have also been linked to the project; Zack Galifianakis (as a homeless man), Danny Trejo (as a prisoner), Sean Penn, Jack Black (as a kidnap victim), Lady Gaga, and French Stewart (as a watch salesman).

The Hollywood Reporter reports that you can add three more names to the cast rumor list: Alan Arkin, Billy Crystal, and Jean-Claude Van Damme (an obvious choice). Arkin is rumored to play a security guard in the film, while there is no word yet on the other actors’ roles in the film.

THE MUPPETS is scheduled to be released on Christmas Day 2011, so here’s to hoping that these casting rumors prove true.
