MR. AND MRS. SMITH to get reboot treatment
It looks like no franchise can stay dead, not even if they feature only one film.
According to Vulture, Fox is looking to go at easy money yet again, as they are planning a prequel/reboot of Doug Liman’s solid action film, MR. AND MRS. SMITH. The 2005 film, starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, follows a married couple who secretly lead double lives as assassins and each are given a final hit--each other.
The film, to be called MR. AND MRS. JONES, will not follow the original cast however. It will focus on a pair of 20-something spies who become paired as a fake married couple post-spy school graduation. Akiva Goldsman, also known as the guy who wrote BATMAN AND ROBIN, will be producing the film, which will probably make a ton of money, and also not be of too high of quality.
It looks like reboots are set to be this decades comic book film, in that, every studio will not only be pumping them out daily, but with the success of films like STAR TREK, they will also be used as hopeful money makers and tent poles for each respective studio. SPIDER-MAN is getting it, and now the 2005 spy thriller is getting the same treatment as well.
