It's pretty safe to say that Werner Herzog is one of the most prolific filmmakers currently working. He's produced a wide range of films that have made him a regular on the foreign art house circuit for decades. Now he's following up a unique set of films, 2009's BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS and the recent CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS, with an epic period film titled QUEEN OF THE DESERT.

Rumor has it that Naomi Watts is in talks to play the lead character. Hit the jump for more details.

Naomi Watts is an incredibly talented actress with a pretty decent filmography behind her, with MULHOLLAND DRIVE being my favorite role of hers. That example works well for this film, as it proves she can work with an enigmatic director, which Herzog surely is.

There isn't a lot of information out there about Herzog's upcoming film. All we really know is that it's epic in scope, which isn't exactly a surprise from this director, and that it's set in the desert. Apparently there isn't a studio backer yet, which may require some convincing even with Naomi Watts on board.

Herzog's got a decent year ahead of him, as his documentary, CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS, will be playing at SXSW and a few other fests. Other than that, this looks to be the next film coming down the pipe from everyone's favorite German filmmaker.
