With buzz surrounding the long-gestating sequel to 2007’s masterful David Cronenberg film, EASTERN PROMISES, promising one hell of a film, that may have just taken a big time hit.

According to MTV, Naomi Watts isn’t so hopeful regarding her involvement in the film:

“I don’t think I’m in it. Nobody called, so I guess they recast or maybe created a new role for a more attractive, younger girl."

Now, before people freak out, the ending of the first film does make the inclusion of a new female lead more than plausible.  Focus Features is behind the film, and with the film apparently shooting sometime this winter (at least before Cronenberg’s COSMOPOLIS) there is still quite a bit to be excited about. Watts is indeed one of today’s most talented thespians, however, with a script penned by Steve Knight, directed by Cronenberg, and starring Viggo Mortensen and Vincent Cassel, hopes are still quite high.

That said, this is a sad bit of information. Watts is a gifted actress, and is a welcome addition to any film’s cast, regardless of who is involved. She was fantastic in the first film, so her presence on screen will surely be missed.  Still though, I can’t help but wait ever so patiently for this film. What about you?
