The National Lampoon name has gone through a long series of ups and downs since its early days in the 1970s. Many movie fans don't realize it, but the comedy franchise began as a magazine. The company made its mark with cutting edge humor and wit, but really broke onto the scene with its movie incarnations with ANIMAL HOUSE and VACATION.

Well, we've just learned that a couple of documentary filmmakers are looking to tell the story of National Lampoon. Check out the full story after the break.

The filmmakers, Douglas Tirola and Susan Bedusa, have won several awards for their previous documentaries - ALL IN: THE POKER MOVIE and AN OMAR BROADWAY FILM. Now, they're looking to tell the story of National Lampoon, beginning with its roots as a magazine and spanning to its current incarnation as purveyor of sub-par films.

Right off the bat, these guys have got me hooked. I'm already interested in the documentary, as this is a story that I've never seen before. I'm always game for a good "fall from grace" story and National Lampoon is such a great example. Wouldn't you like to know the series of unfortunate events that caused the company who made ANIMAL HOUSE to give us VAN WILDER?

ANIMAL HOUSE and VACATION are among the funniest movies of their time, and they're pretty much responsible for catapulting the careers of Chevy Chase and John Belushi to center stage. While each has seen its fair share of rip-offs, these two remain classics in the eyes of many.

At this point, it's only a matter of time until we get that SNL tell all documentary I've been dying for.
