Neil Burger helming UNCHARTED

One of the most talked-about projects around has been the long-gestating production of the beloved video game franchise, Uncharted.

The last news on the project saw director leaving David O. Russell the film after handing in a behemoth screenplay without much resemblance to the actual game, and the project was since thought cold. Until today.

Variety is reporting that LIMITLESS director Neil Burger has jumped aboard the project, after pitching a take on the film that caught the eye of producers Ari Arad, Charles Roven, and Alex Gartner. It remains to be seen if actor Mark Wahlberg will be remaining on the project as the lead, but all signs point to that being up to his response to the film’s latest screenplay.

Personally, I find this to actually be quite an interesting choice. I haven’t seen LIMITLESS, but the film did take home $150 million and, for a science fiction film, that’s nothing to scoff at. The potential of the Russell version of the film was interesting, but ultimately sounded nothing like a true blue UNCHARTED film, so while Burger may not be as talented a filmmaker, this one should definitely be more appealing to fans.

I personally find Burger to be a much more interesting name, simply because Russell’s talents are best suited elsewhere, but overall, this really sounds like a project to keep an eye on.
