PROMETHEUS has been a bit confusing to follow during its development. First Ridley Scott was doing an ALIEN prequel, then he wasn't, then he was but with stipulations, and so on and so forth. Now, through a new offiicial synopsis and an extensive interview with lead writer Damon Lindelof, we get a vague look in to what to expect.

Here's the official, very brief plot synopsis:

"Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery."

While that doesn't shed much light in to this world, a recent interview with screenwriter and geek king Damon Lindelof showed a bit more insight into the thought process behind crafting this film:

"I’ve always felt that really good prequels should be original movies. And the sequels to those prequels should not be the movie which already exists because, with all due respect to anyone who makes a prequel, but why would you ruin the greatest twist in the history of cinema, 'Luke, I am your father', by showing me three movies which basically spoil that surprise. You can do movies which take place before STAR WARS, but I don’t need to see the story of the Skywalker clan. Show me something else which I can’t guess the possible outcome of. There is no suspense in inevitability. So a true prequel should essentially proceed the events of the original film, but be about something entirely different, feature different characters, have an entirely different theme, although it takes place in that same world. That was my fundamental feeling about what this movie wanted to be."

Sorry for the long quote, but it's refreshing to hear a bit of the thought process that went in to such a huge franchise like the ALIEN films. He obviously wanted to make sure that anything they did in PROMETHEUS wasn't just a rehash of facts already known. There was already a lot of buzz on this film given the top-notch talent associated with it, but now it's become even more promising.

In addition to the plot details, Ben Foster has just joined the cast, which already includes Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Michael Fassbender. No details on the role, of course.

PROMETHEUS is scheduled to hit theaters in 3D on June 8, 2012.
