New documentaries from Werner Herzog, Errol Morris, and Ondi Timoner announced for this year’s TIFF
Just a month. I have to keep saying that to myself, or else my anticipation for the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival may get the better of me.
After the massive announcement of just about 50 films set to bow at the hotly-anticipated film festival, we have a few more to add to that bill, and boy is it a threesome.
According to Indie Wire, new films from documentary filmmakers such as Ondi Timoner, Errol Morris, and even Werner Herzog will be making their debut at the upcoming festival, making this year’s slate one of the more impressive collections of films in recent memory.
Herzog’s film may be the most talked-about of the three, as it will be the film CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS, which for those who will remember, is the auteur’s prehistoric cave documentary that he shot in 3D. Morris’ film, TABLOID, will join Timoner’s look at climate change expert Bjorn Lomborg, called COOL IT.
However, the list doesn’t stop there. Alex Gibney will be premiering his Eliot Spitzer doc, CLIENT 9, alongside new films from Thom Zimny, Patricio Guzman, and Frederick Wiseman. In other words, this year may very well be the year of the documentary if these names are to mean anything.
While I see mostly narrative features at festivals, the festival circuit is known to have some of the best documentaries, and with a threesome like Herzog, Morris, and Timoner, I may have to make equal time for the documentary side of things when I head to our neighbor to the north in early September.
What film are you looking forward to?
