New glimpse at Julie Taymor’s upcoming adaptation of Shakespeare’s THE TEMPEST

After films like FRIDA and ACROSS THE UNIVERSE (as well as the film TITUS), Julie Taymor has made a very singular stamp for herself within the world of film. As one of the mediums more visually impressive filmmakers, her upcoming Shakespeare adaptation, THE TEMPEST, looks to follow directly in that suit. The film stars Chris Cooper, David Straitharn, Tom Conti, Ben Wishaw, Djimon Hounsou, Alfred Molina, Russell Brand, and Helen Mirren as Prospera.

Thanks to Alan Cumming’s official website (via The Playlist), we now have a new look at the film, and I must say, it looks quite good. This should be a breath of fresh air in the stiff and stuffy world that is Shakespeare adaptations, similar to Baz Lurhman’s ROMEO + JULIET, or more so, Taymor’s TITUS.  TITUS may very well be her strongest film, so while she has had a rather polarizing career, I’m hoping that this follows in TITUS’ footsteps, because this has the makings of one hell of a film.

Julie Taymor, one of my ABSOLUTE favorite directors ever. In fact she's one of the very few directors (and only woman on that list) that made me decide I wanted to go to film school, pretty much after seeing Titus for the first time when I was 14.

I have been waiting for more word on this film for a long time for many reasons. 1. it's been a while since something fresh has come from her (and yes I did love Across the Universe, but not as much as I love Titus). 2. The Tempest is probably my favorite Shakespeare play. 3. it's Julie Taymor…she seiously makes me swoon just because I find her to be one of the most underrated directors out there and everything she's ever made (even on the stage) has always made me gasp.

Thank you for posting news on it. I was excited to see it! :)

Hey, my pleasure! I too cannot wait for this thing. Taymour is one of my favorite directors as well, and I could not be more excited for this thing. I love all of her work, so here's hoping it can live up to the crazy hype. I fully think it can. :D

i think it will live up to it, actually. especially for the Taymor fans. the only way it wont is for the people that are too afraid or just plain don't like Shakespeare. and that's fine, it is. to each their own. but sometimes i wish people would just stop and appreciate her absolute eye for art.

like i said, when i was a teen and going through this whole push and pull with wanting to do filmmaking for a career, she was the ONLY woman in a sea of men directors i looked up to. it made me a little sad, but by god she has never let me down. :)
