With the strum of a Spanish guitar, the latest trailer for the Mel Gibson action vehicle GET THE GRINGO begins, and although it's slightly derivative of films like DESPERADO, seeing Gibson in this role should make it easier to welcome him back to the big screen. Although, this won't be seen at your local theater. GET THE GRINGO is set to debut through DirecTV on May 1st, eventually landing on Blu-ray, VOD, and digital download.
The film is still set to have a very limited theatrical run, however, with a special screening in Austin, TX with Gibson in attendance. When Gibson screened a rough cut of APOCALYPTO at Fantastic Fest back in 2006, I was present when Gibson came out after the film to do a Q&A. This was mere months after his highly publicized arrest, but the film was so powerful that I highly doubt anyone was actually thinking about that incident and not the exhilarating film we had just watched. Hopefully, GET THE GRINGO will have the same effect on audiences.
Check out the trailer after the break.
Honestly, if it wasn't for Gibson, GET THE GRINGO probably wouldn't be on my radar right now. It just seems like I know what to expect from a film like this.
