Parnassus

There have been many a poster for Terry Gilliam's latest fantastical fantasy THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS, yet none have quite measured up to the film's vibe. That is, until this whimsical wonderful poster of wonderment was released today! It is a UK poster to be exact and, boy, does it unite the kingdom of interesting characters from the PARNASSUS!

I would almost say that it reflects very much the style of some of the art done for the Beatles in the 70s. Not to mention that it shouts of classic Gilliam, from his days of MONTY PYTHON and the unique style of animation used within those films themselves.

Check the poster out after the jump and check out THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS when it hits limited theaters this Christmas.

I look forward to seeing this too.:)

The Beatles were broken up by early 1970. To what artwork are you referring, good man? 1967's Sgt. Pepper? 1968's Yellow Submarine? 1966's Best of the Beatles, with Pete Best?

My apologies sir! I will answer for my crimes of mistyping, which is exactly the mistake I made here! Those darn 6 and 7 keys are right next to each other! Thank you for catching the error of my finger's ways!

To answer your question, I was mostly referring to the Sgt. Pepper album. Not just the cover art but the whole album insert which, I'm sure as you well know, is filled with cut & paste, collage-style artwork that we see echoed here in the poster for PARNASSUS.

I guess you could liken it to Yellow Submarine also, which is obviously a bit more cartoonish. Yet, if you look at Gilliam's earlier stuff, it features a lot of design that is very Yellow Submarine-esque. So, in a round about way, they come from the same place in the sense of imagery and design.

With that said, this poster is a beautiful example of Gilliam getting back to the style he is known for with films like BARON MUNCHAUSEN. A style that The Beatles also used to draw you into their magical world. Let's just hope the film is as magical as this poster makes it seem.
