Just last week, we brought you news of Chris Weitz tossing around the idea of giving up directing all together, possibly to be a better surfer, learn kung-fu, or learn to speak Spanish fluently. But when your latest film (NEW MOON) takes in almost $258 million worldwide and breaks all kinds of box office records, then you may rethink your decision to walk into the sun, revealing yourself for what you truly are thus giving up your life as a director. Wow, so many parallels.

Not to mention the fact that Weitz may get to both direct a film and fulfill some of his desired dreams at the same time. No, unfortunately the director is not doing a reboot of SURF NINJAS, but is instead looking at directing THE GARDNER, which Weitz says is about “a Mexican gardener in Los Angeles” and his struggles to protect and provide for his son. THE GARDNER would reteam Weitz with Summit Entertainment, who produced NEW MOON, as well as all the other films in the TWILIGHT series. The film, with a screenplay from Eric Eason (MANITO), is said to begin production sometime in March or April of next year.

Weitz also dispelled the rumors that he would be giving up directing after he made his follow-up to NEW MOON, which came out of an article from the New York Post’s Page Six, who ran the story from Weitz’s interview with the original source of Moviemaker magazine.
