Next PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN films to be stand-alone projects

With the fourth film in the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise, ON STRANGER TIDES, only about two months out from release, plans are being put into place to continue the franchise afterwards.

Well, in a way, at least.

In an interview with USA Today, ultra producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that, based on responses from test audiences viewing STRANGER TIDES, the plan moving forward is to have the franchise continue, but with stand-alone stories.

“The audience told us what they loved about it is that it was fresh, it was new, it was a whole new story…So that will carry over into the next one too, to give it something fresh and different.  As long as the audience embraces this one, we’ll certainly try to make another one.  It’s really up to Johnny.  He loves the character.”

This joins a film like Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman project, which has been revealed as a stand-alone film, at least with regards to what WB has planned for their upcoming JUSTICE LEAGUE film and subsequent DC Universe features.

Personally, while I’m not a huge fan of the franchise, this ultimately doesn’t get me too excited moving forward.  The great thing about franchises is that you are able to get broad narratives over the multiple features, so this seems like a weird choice for Disney and the PIRATES franchise as a whole.

This is the perfect kind of franchise to do something like this. It worked for Indy (the 4th not withstanding).
