Nicolas Cage’s SEASON OF THE WITCH gets dumped for a January release

Remember that little Nicolas Cage film, SEASON OF THE WITCH?

Yeah, neither did I.

Well, according to Variety, the upcoming Lionsgate release, which was quietly taken off its March 19, 2010 release date, will be shoved into theaters on January 7, 2011.

The film is directed by GONE IN 60 SECONDS helmer Dominic Sena, and follows a pair of knights who are ordered to follow a young woman accused of being a witch, as she goes to a remote abbey for trial. The film also stars Ron Perlman, Claire Foy, and Robert Sheehan, and doesn’t seem to be the most beloved film on the Lionsgate slate.

Personally, while I didn’t think the trailer was anything special, this was a film that I always wondered why it had been shelved, and this apparently doesn’t bode well for the film. I have lost any little hope that I did have for the film now, and while it will be interesting to see what Cage can do after a few really fantastic performances have recently gotten under his belt, hopes aren’t high, especially after this little diddy of a delay.
