Nicolas Winding Refn

It’s no secret, I have what can best be described as a man crush on the Danish auteur, Nicolas Winding Refn. I mean, it’s hard not to when it comes to someone so damn talented, as Refn truly is. The director is set to release his latest film, VALHALLA RISING this month via IFC and their newly launched On-Demand service, Midnight, and has been talking quite a bit as to just what he wants to do to follow that up.

Well, along with his much talked about western, ONLY GOD FORGIVES, he also has a hotly anticipated noir film, DRIVE, staring Ryan Gosling, and even threw his name into the hat for the job of directing a feature film based on Wonder Woman. Now we know what he’s doing next.

According to The Playlist, he will be shooting the aforementioned DRIVE as his next feature, and is looking at it as not only his next film, but a launching pad for WONDER WOMAN:

“I’m very optimistic about ‘Drive.’ The people [working on it] are great. So ask me in a year if I liked my Hollywood experience, but I have this dream concept: I want to make Wonder Woman as a feature And I thought in order to access to that I should probably become a bit more Hollywood friendly.”

Personally, I couldn’t agree more with him. While he hasn’t done something of that big a budget, neither had Chris Nolan, and look at what the hell we got with that. He and Nolan have run very, very similar careers, and if I’m being honest, I have to say, I think Refn is a far better director than Nolan was prior to BATMAN RETURNS. He hasn’t done something like WONDER WOMAN in his career, and being as gifted as he is, I don’t hold that against him. While I don’t know if he will get it, I sure as hell hope so.
