Jason Statham and Taylor Hackford

Talented director Taylor Hackford (DOLORES CLAIBORNE, PROOF OF LIFE, RAY) is set to helm a new noir film based on a character created by Donald E. Westlake, who wrote his books under the pen name Richard Stark. The film, entitled PARKER, is not going to be a novel adaptation of one of Stark's books, but a new story based upon his character. The script will be penned by John J. McLaughlin, who co-wrote BLACK SWAN.

Jason Statham is in talks to play the character, who is a thief who doesn't steal from people who need it and will only kill unless he has to, but prefers not to. This, of course, makes me want to check out some of these books, because I just can't say no to a good thriller.

Of course, this news about Statham is not set in stone and is subject to change. No word yet on when filming will start.
