Oscar disqualifies scores for TRUE GRIT, BLACK SWAN, more

While it’s now become like beating a dead horse, the Academy Awards and their music branch have become better known for their arbitrary rules and their disqualifications of great scores like Johnny Greenwood’s stunner for THERE WILL BE BLOOD, than the scores they actually allow to be eligible for vote.

Now it’s 2010’s turn, and you could have seen this one from a mile away.

Variety is reporting that scores for BLACK SWAN, TRUE GRIT, THE FIGHTER, and THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT have been disqualified for this year’s Academy Awards. Now, the latter two were admittedly not likely to earn respective nominations, but the former two were some of this year’s most superb pieces of sonic composition. That said, both BLACK SWAN and TRUE GRIT were not likely to earn a nomination, as SWAN’s composer Clint Mansell based his score around the Tchaikovsky ballet from where the film draws its name, and GRIT primarily used hymns as a basis for much of Carter Burwell’s score.

Alexandre Desplat is now the likely one of three leaders in the category, for his score for THE KING’S SPEECH. He’s a beloved composer, and with an admittedly soft year for original scores, this should be one of the real locks for the upcoming year. Look for INCEPTION to also get a nod, as well as THE SOCIAL NETWORK, marking a three horse race this year. Personally, I think Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross should take this category for THE SOCIAL NETWORK, but really, any three of these would make this writer more than happy.

Who do you think should win?

I am really disappointed by this announcement, but also not surprised. I ended up being really impressed by a good number of scores that came out this year, but I have to say I’m throwing my hat in the ring for Reznor & Ross.

Of this bunch, I’d have to say I’m right there with you. Reznor and Ross should win, I just don’t think they’ll be down to give it to them, when someone like Desplat or Zimmer are in the running.

Agreed (unfortunately), not that I don’t love Desplat and Zimmer’s work, but I feel out of this bunch Reznor & Ross deserve it the most. We will see!
