The film hits theaters in October

Director Matthijs van Heijningen has yet to release a full-length feature, but that’ll change once THE THING arrives in theaters. Slowly but surely, we’ll be seeing more about the horror flick. For now, however, this new one-sheet, which can be viewed after the break, serves as our main enticement.

The film, a prequel of sorts to John Carpenter’s 1982 feature, hits theaters on October 14 and stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD) and Joel Edgerton (the upcoming drama WARRIOR). (more...)

One of the most talked-about films leading into and coming out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival was definitely a film entitled HIGHER GROUND.

Directed by and starring Vera Farmiga, the film marks her directorial debut, and follows the story of a woman dealing with some issues with her faith. The film features a fantastic cast including Joshua Leonard, John Hawkes, Dagmara Dominszyk, Donna Murphy, Bill Irwin, Norbert Leo Butz, and Ebon Moss-Bacharach, and now thanks to Apple, a new trailer has hit for the film. In a major win for movie geeks everywhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that it would begin archiving film posters from Mondo, the Alamo Drafthouse's collectible art boutique. One of the first posters to be archived will be Drew Struzan's FRANKENSTEIN. The new poster marks the first collaboration between Mondo and legend Struzan, but I doubt it will be the last. More details on this poster will be revealed soon - follow Mondo's Twitter for news.

The posters will be archived in the Academy's Margaret Herrick Library. The library already includes over 38,000 posters, and the Mondo prints will join those in special climate-controlled vaults. They will also be available for viewing online. The library also includes a stunning 10 million photographs, 300,000 clipping files, 80,000 screenplays, and 32,000 books. Its Beverly Hills location is open to the public four days a week. It is, quite simply, a treasure trove. You can check out the full press release after the break, along with a few more of my favorite Mondo prints. (more...)

Chris Hemsworth is emerging as the big new go-to name for action properties this year (bringing to mind something like Sam Worthington's rise to fame after AVATAR, or even Tom Hardy's similar trajectory in the past few months), as the Aussie is adding yet another big role to his already-packed schedule.

Hemsworth will star in the true life tale of British Formula One driver James Hunt in RUSH. The film has been penned by Peter Morgan and looks to be none other than Ron Howard's next directing project. The film will focus on Hunt's rivalry with fellow racer, Austrian Niki Lauda, in the 1970's. Deadline reports that "deals aren't done yet, but it's all shaping up for this picture to happen early next year." UPDATE: Deadline is also reporting that Depp is set to star in THE NIGHT STALKER, a remake of the titular 1970's film, as well as picture looking at the life of Paul Revere over at Disney.  He's quite a busy man.

In doing rounds for the release of his latest film, MIRAL, which hits store shelves tomorrow, director Julian Schnabel has revealed just what the hell he plans to give us lucky cinephiles next.

Schnabel recently revealed to The Playlist that he will be helming a film entitled IN THE HAND OF DANTE next, and that Johnny Depp would be starring in the film. Depp bought the rights to the novel from which the film is based a while back, and asked Schnabel to direct having “bonded” after the film BEFORE NIGHT FALLS.

The story will follow “two separate stories, one set in 14th century Sicily, Italy featuring the legendary poet Dante Alighieri, and another set in the autumn of 2001 featuring a fictionalized version of Nick Tosches (the novel’s author) as the lead. Both stories alternate as Dante tries to finish writing his magnum opus and goes on a journey for mystical knowledge in Sicily. Meanwhile Tosches the Dante expert, living a quiet life in New York is swept up into an underworld of danger and mystery when black market traders ask him to authenticate what might be Dante’s original manuscript.” (more...)

Jason Sudeikis, star of GOOD OLD FASHIONED ORGY

This year has been pretty big for Jason Sudeikis, aside from his job as a cast member of Saturday Night Live, he has been beefing up on his feature film work. Most recently, he co-starred in HORRIBLE BOSSES, which came out just this past Friday. Although his film career is blossoming at a very fast rate, he doesn't seem prepared to give up on television just yet.

Sudeikis is now going to be involved with the third season of Jody Hill's HBO series, Eastbound & Down.

For those of you who haven't seen the show before, it follows Kenny Powers (Danny McBride), a brash, drug-abusing, ex-baseball player after he has lost the spotlight. The first season followed him as he moved back to his hometown, the second season placed him deep in Mexico. The third season will mark his return to America. Sudeikis will be playing Shane, one of Kenny's new friends for the season. (more...)

Now I think we can start getting a tad bit excited for this.

Ever since it was first announced, the English-language remake of Park Chan-wook’s OLDBOY has always been something that film fans all over the web really have not found too interested in. However, Mandate Pictures just made this much more interesting.

The studio has announced (via Deadline) that Spike Lee, who was rumored to direct the film last week, will be directed the remake, from a screenplay by Mark Protosevich. For those who don’t know, OLDBOY follows “a man who is kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughter’s birthday. For fifteen years, he is held captive, and, upon his release, must begin his journey to find the reason for his imprisonment. He soon finds out that his kidnapper has plans for him more tortuous than his solitary confinement.” (more...)
