The Howling

Like HALLOWEEN and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, THE HOWLING franchise is set to start over. The werewolf franchise that started in 1981 with THE HOWLING and went on to have six sequels will have new life due to producers Joel Kastelberg (SLEEP WITH ME, MR. JEALOUSY) and Etchie Stroh (STRANGER THAN FICTION, DANCING AT THE BLUE IGUANA), who will be re-starting the franchise with THE HOWLING: REBORN.

The original HOWLING was directed by Joe Dante, who also gave the world GREMLINS. THE HOWLING was co-written by indie icon John Sayles (LONE STAR, MEN WITH GUNS). It also happens to be one of the best werewolf movies ever made. (more…)

SHORTS blu-ray

If it’s a movie review you’re looking for, check out my theatrical review of SHORTS HERE!

Blu-ray Rating: 8/10

New on Blu-ray and standard DVD, SHORTS is a tall tale in short form about what happens when humans have the power to literally get anything they want. As these tales go, things never end up good for us greedy humans!

The film is the latest effort from do-it-all director Robert Rodriguez, who dabbles in both the violent, gritty action films (SIN CITY, PLANET TERROR) and the occasional kids’ films (SPY KIDS, THE ADVENTURES OF SHARK BOY AND LAVA GIRL). As I noted in my theatrical review, “SHORTS is a movie for kids by a filmmaker who knows how to make appealing, crowd-pleasing films, no matter the age.” The case is no different when it comes to the Blu-ray edition of SHORTS, as Rodriguez includes a few fun, yet informative special features for kids who are into the process of filmmaking. In short, it’s fun for the whole family! (more…)

Picture 1

The closest thing the world has to an Apatow sequel is the upcoming spin-off of the hit comedy FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL, titled GET HIM TO THE GREEK. This film will follow two of MARSHALL’s supporting characters, played by Russell Brand and Jonah Hill, in a new and wildly crazy road adventure. This “sideways sequel,” as Judd Apatow likes to call it, is going to be wild. ““It’s sort of like MY FAVORITE YEAR on heroin.” (more…)

50 Cent

I know I just made many of you shout “What?!” probably frightening your grandparents that are currently taking a nap on the couch this holiday break (I just scared my own grandpa, hopefully he’ll quit snoring long enough for me to finish this post). Your eyes do not deceive you, Curtis Jackson, better known as the rapper 50 Cent, is making a movie (not just starring in, but making). Jackson has already completed and sold the script for the film, which is currently titled THE GUN. (more…)

Joshua Jackson

Joshua Jackson has come a long way since stealing my heart in those MIGHTY DUCKS movies and “Dawson’s Creek.”  Currently, you can see him on FOX’s science fiction mystery show “Fringe” that airs on Thursday nights. As I’ve matured, my crush on Jackson has subsided, but I am still aware of his talent as an actor, so it comes as no surprise that he is generating a lot of buzz with his new television series and landing more complex roles.

Variety announced today that Jackson is making his way back to the big screen with UFO, a film about humans who are trying to survive after aliens take over Earth. (more…)

NEW RELEASES

This week is a pretty slow week when it comes to new releases. The most notable one is Judd Apatow’s latest, FUNNY PEOPLE, starring Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen. While I highly enjoyed the film, do not let the title full you. It’s not very funny! The other big release this week is the follow-up to THE DA VINCI CODE, ANGELS & DEMONS, which was slightly more enjoyable than its predecessor. This is mainly due to the fact that the film cut the overbearing religious commentary, as well as Tom Hanks’ flowing locks.

The title-o-the week I’ll be rushing out to buy:
I’m definitely going to be picking up THE VENGEANCE TRILOGY, featuring key three films from visionary Korean filmmaker Chan-wook Park. The set includes SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE, OLDBOY, and LADY VENGEANCE. Nothing says “quiet night at home” like watching Park’s characters serve up some well-deserved retribution. It is sure to be a bloody good time had by all!

Check out all the key releases for this week after the jump! (more…)

THe Missing Person

Michael Shannon’s one humble dude. You probably wouldn’t expect that after seeing some of his insane performances (BUG, REVOLUTIONARY ROAD). I spoke with Michael on the phone last week about his recent role, THE MISSING PERSON, and the man’s answers to all my questions were very honest, very cool, and very well-formed. Check the out the interview, as well as the film’s official synopsis, poster, and trailer after the jump!

Untitled Sports Movie
Hi, there, readers! Have you been living under a rock? No? Good! That means I won’t have to tell you anything you don’t already know in our fun Sunday afternoon weekend box office wrap-up. Oh, wait, one thing you may not know as of yet. Team Jacob. What? You heard me. Team Jacob. Onward!

The big news on Friday morning was that NEW MOON had broken the previous midnight showing box office record. That reign over tickets and Twi-hards alike continued through the weekend, earning the film $140.7 million total. It’s a huge figure, but it still was not enough to topple the top two box office openers of all-time, THE DARK KNIGHT and SPIDER-MAN 3. It is, however, the biggest box office opener of 2009, the biggest opening day earner of all-time ($72.7 million) and number three on that elusive all-time opening weekend box office list. Howl at the moon, my little wolvies and vamps like, and congrats. (more…)

American Gladiators

NBC’s recent attempt to bring “American Gladiators” back did not work with a new TV show based on the original series about extremely fit average Joes taking on ultra-buff “gladiators” in various challenges. Apparently if a TV show based on a former TV show does not work, the next logical step is to make a movie out of it. What? I once watched six straight episodes of “Sex and the City” while being a male and this sounds odd even to me.

I imagine many of you are thinking, how is an AMERICAN GLADIATORS movie going to work? You know, since the show was about people competing in physical competitions, and does not really set up well for a cinematic story. Well, all we know so far is that the AMERICAN GLADIATORS will be superheros, and I’m very excited and terrified to hear more movie plot details as they bust in. (more…)

superhero tease

I love graphs like these because they help put certain movies in perspective. In this case, comic book movies and how they’ve been doing at the box office over the past few decades.

It comes to us courtesy of the Kold Cast blog (via First Showing) and it looks back to 1978, with the arrival of SUPERMAN, all the way until today. The main conclusion I take away from the graph? This is a big business that keeps on getting bigger. (more…)

megan fox transformers

The exchange of words between Michael Bay and Megan Fox continues with no end in sight, but it looks like things are beginning to die down. At this point, it’s almost impossible to follow everything they’ve said to each other, but I believe it started when Fox said downplayed TRANSFORMER 2′s quality, to which Bay responded by saying that she’s only “23 years old and she still has a lot of growing to do.”

Then she called him “Hitler” and crew members wrote a nasty public letter to the actress, describing her as “dumb as a rock.” Then Michael Bay seemed to joke about wanting to kill off Fox in the next movie. Why does it feel like I’m describing a feud between two third graders? Well, it looks like Bay is ready to bury the hatchet. (more…)
