It's no secret around these parts that we here at Gordon and the Whale are big fans of Evan Glodell's barn-burner of a festival favorite, BELLFLOWER. Billed as "a love story with apocalyptic stakes", the film is also mind-blowingly original and inventive, but with real heart at its center. The film captivated all of us at Sundance and SXSW, which is why we're so excited that it's hitting screens on August 5. But I am even more excited to give our Los Angeles readers a chance to check the film out at a very "Special Fangirl Screening" at LA's own wonderful New Beverly Cinema on August 2 at 7:30PM.

This is going to be a very special and very fun screening, and we're exploding with excitement that we are a part of the event hosted by Oscilloscope Laboratories, along with scream queen Danielle Harris and dear friend o' the Whale, Movieline's own Jen Yamato. This screening will feature all the bells and whistles (and, uh, flamethrowers) that fans of the film have come to expect - writer/director/star Evan Glodell will be there, along with "the beautiful women of BELLFLOWER" (there's a bunch), and the most beautiful of all the BELLFLOWER ladies - the infamous Medusa (she's hell on wheels).

Find out how to RSVP for the the screening after the break! (more...)

After starting in Washington D.C. nine years ago, Horror Movie Night has expanded to include chapters in Austin, Dallas, and Chicago. GATW’s own Brian Kelley is the originator and programmer of this illustrious weekly Wednesday night tradition which features a “classic” horror film. Each week I will be reviewing/commenting on the past week’s selection so do your best to find the film, most of which have not made it past VHS, and follow along. Better yet, start your own chapter!

RITUALS VHS cover

This week at Horror Movie Night we went the more serious route. This is something you can tell by the release date alone, 1977, before watching a single frame. The '70s, for the most part, meant business. Surely horror fans will agree it’s nice to find a new old film to fall in love with in the genre. In Peter Carter’s film RITUALS (aka THE CREEPER) an angle is explored in the backwoods slasher world that results in some real fear and suspense. (more...)

Sometimes too much of a good thing is still just a bit too much.

That’s the problem in the face of beloved Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston, who thought either he’d have more time or that he’d be able to clone himself, as he not only double booked himself, but is now feeling the result of that.

GANGSTER SQUAD director Ruben Fleischer revealed to BlackBook (via The Playlist) that he doesn’t “think he’s (Cranston) going to be able to be in the movie. He got offered ARGO, and we were hoping he would be able to do ARGO and then do our film, but it doesn’t look that way. Everyone wants a piece of Bryan now. He’s the belle of the ball.”

While it is a bit upsetting that he’ll be leaving GANGSTER SQUAD, that film’s cast is still impeccable, including the likes of Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, and Anthony Mackie. You win some, you lose some. (more...)

One of the odder casting choices in recent memory comes thanks to Alex Proyas and his upcoming take on Milton’s iconic piece, Paradise Lost. The film will star Bradley Cooper, in one of his most out of the box roles, as Lucifer.

However, according to Ausfilm (via The Playlist), those looking to see Cooper decked out as the devil himself, may be disappointed. The outlet is reporting that the film will have a huge production culminating in 100 complete weeks of work (20 weeks pre-production, eight weeks of shooting and 72 weeks of post), and will motion captured instead of live action.

The film looks at the battle between Lucifer and Michael, and with the immense battles portrayed here, it’s not all that shocking that Proyas is going this route, and with the long production time, it should give Legendary, the studio behind the picture, enough time to really craft a beautiful feature. Ryan Gosling is set to turn some heads this year; he stars in the star-studded romantic comedy CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE, the Cannes Award-winning action flick DRIVE, and George Clooney’s political thriller THE IDES OF MARCH.

The last of those films stands as a huge possibility for the actor to pick up some awards recognition, and thanks to RopeofSilicon, we have the first official photo of Gosling in THE IDES OF MARCH; you can check that out after the break. Based on Beau Willimon’s play Farragut North, the film will see Gosling’s character get wrapped up in a serious political scandal. (more...)

The Cinema Guild acquires NATURAL SELECTION

The dark comedy NATURAL SELECTION served as the directorial debut for Robbie Pickering. Comedies aren’t often lauded at film festivals or awards shows, but the film picked up several major awards at the SXSW Film Festival this year; that includes two awards for Best Narrative Feature and breakthrough performance awards for Rachael Harris (THE HANGOVER) and Matt O’Leary (BRICK).

Thankfully, the Cinema Guild has taken over stateside distribution rights for NATURAL SELECTION. It seems that Harris’ performance, as a devoted housewife who finds out a shocking secret about her husband, is what’s sparking most of the talk, so she’s likely to be a huge marketing point for the film.

Can Harris make her way into the awards season as a major contender? That still remains to be seen, but at least we can look forward to a quirky, intelligent comedy led by a terrific actress who’s excitedly made her breakthrough. (more...)

Another day, another huge teaser trailer for a hugely anticipated comic book-based, action-packed tentpole project. This time, instead of the brooding badassery of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, we finally have our first glimpse at the upcoming Marc Webb film, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (via Youtube), and I must say, it definitely looks intriguing.

The film stars a top-notch cast led by Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker himself, and rounded out by Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, and Dennis Leary. Following the story of the origin of Spider-Man, the film is Sony’s attempt to reboot one of, if not their biggest cash cow franchise. As mentioned above, it’s helmed by 500 DAYS OF SUMMER director Marc Webb, and appears to be a really solid, if not that all inventive a take on the character. (more...)

No one does acting like a douchebag quite like country music icon Dwight Yoakam. Be it his awesome turn in PANIC ROOM or his equally entertaining performance in the pair of CRANK films, the actor has become something of a welcome addition to a cavalcade of projects.

And now he’s blessing yet another film with his presence. Variety reveals that Yoakam will take on the role of the main villain in the upcoming Gore Verbinski film, THE LONE RANGER. He joins Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Tom Wilkinson, and Ruth Wilson, and the outlet also reveals that James Badge Dale, Barry Pepper, as well as Helena Bonham Carter are in talks to join the film as well.
