Paranormal Activity

Well, the predictable has happened, the LA Times is reporting that Paramount is considering making a sequel to the very low-budget horror hit, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY.

Given studios' current propensity to do remakes and sequels when it comes to the horror genre, plus the fact that PARANORMAL ACTIVITY cost only $11,000 and has made over $62 million at the box office (and is still going strong), I think we all knew the sequel talk was coming. In a recent interview, Paramount chairman Brad Gray said "we have the rights on a worldwide basis to do PARANORMAL 2 and we're looking to see if that makes some sense."

While a possible PARANORMAL ACTIVITY is not shocking, I don’t have much faith in the project being anywhere near as scary or enjoyable as the first film. The first film sneaked up on you, but the second time we know what we're getting. The home movie gimmick that was used with the first film could lose its magic with a sequel. And if they decide to ditch the gimmick and do a more traditional horror film with PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, then we might be looking at another BOOK OF SHADOWS: BLAIR WITCH 2 situation (where the bigger budget, more standard horror sequel to the BLAIR WITCH tanked at the box office and with good reason, it sucked). Either way, if a PARANORMAL ACTIVITY sequel does happen, it seems almost certain to be a letdown.

Fellow PARANORMAL ACTIVITY fans, what do you think about this? Do you think a PARANORMAL ACTIVITY sequel will be anywhere close to good as the original?

Doubt it'll happen, and hell no is my opinion. Some movies deserve to be on their own. This is such a classic, but so was the exorcist and look what happened to it. Studios…please stop the franchising you greedy bastards.
