Peter Parker gets parents for SPIDER-MAN reboot; new villain cast

I’m sorry, but now it’s just starting to get kind of silly.

According to THR, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Annie Parisse, and Julianne Nicholson have all joined the cast of the upcoming Sony-led and Marc Webb-directed reboot of the SPIDER-MAN film franchise.

Now, the interesting point of contention here is that Scott and Nicholson will be playing our lead, Peter Parker’s parents in the film, marking his parents’ first time on screen, and one of the rare times the pair have been shown in any medium with regards to this series.

Rounding out the new cast members are Khan, who is the most interesting addition here, and is best known for his roles in films like SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE as well as A MIGHTY HEART, and will be playing a new villain named Van Atter. Parisse will play his wife.

Personally, this just sounds like it’s starting to become quite a bit of a mess. A second villain, Parker’s parents, and then toss in the probability that we will be getting yet another take on the origin of Spidey, has me thinking that while there is more than a bit of upside for this film, that it may ultimately prove to be a bit of a mess. I love all of the cast here, particularly Scott and Khan, but I’m only getting more cautious with every new casting announcement.

And here I was getting all excited about the Lizard being the main villain. It’s much more likely that this new one will be the main villain, since he will probably be one of Peter’s classmates, with the Lizard filling a secondary plot line. And Sony is risking alienating all the comic fans by creating a new villain for a reboot many think is unnecessary.

Well, Khan is going to be a villain known as the Proto-Goblin, so who the hell knows at this point. Honestly, it just sounds like they are chucking stuff at the wall to see what sticks. Doesn’t sound like good news to me at all. Very, very nervous about this thing.

I’m still cautiously optimistic. I loved Marc Webb’s direction of (500) Days of Summer and I loved Andrew Garfield in Red Riding. There are some excellent actors involved in this reboot, I’m just curious to see how it all gets put together.

And personally I feel this reboot was necessary, if a bit too soon. I was never a big fan of Tobey Maguire as Spidey and the tone of the films was really starting to get off course. Still enjoyed them though, c’mon its Spider-Man!
