PLANET OF THE APES prequel set for summer 2011 release
The good news is, the recent influx in every single damn film going the 3D route (or so it seems) now takes up the headspace, ennui, and general disdain in my life that the remake/redux/reboot trend once did. How lucky for the PLANET OF THE APES prequel!
The project, which we told you about back in March, centers around the ape Caesar, the chimp that eventually leads the revolt seen in 1972’s CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, and how he came to be. The film, now tentatively titled just RISE OF THE APES, will release on June 24, 2011. Hello, summer blockbuster territory! I hope the popcorn-chomping masses are ready for a “cautionary tale” about genetic engineering gone awry.
What is most interesting about this announcement, however, is a new tidbit regarding the technical aspects of our starring apes. Peter Jackson’s visual effects company, WETA Digital, has been hired to render all of RISE’s chimps. This marks the first time an APES movie will be made without costumed actors. Though not a surprising turn of events, it is an intriguing one that I am looking forward to seeing.
Today’s news also brings us official confirmation that Rupert Wyatt will direct the film from a script by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa.
Are you looking forward to RISE OF THE APES, or is it just me?
