PRESTO director to make his directorial debut for Sony Pictures Animation with THE FAMILIARS
If there is one thing that I dig more than Pixar’s feature films, it’s the company’s short films that precede the features.
One of the best happens to be PRESTO, which premiered in front of WALL-E, an equally brilliant feature film from the best animation studio running. Well, according to THR, the film’s director, Doug Sweetland, will be making his feature film debut, and it won’t be for his former home of 16 years.
The outlet is reporting that the filmmaker will be directing THE FAMILIARS for Sony Pictures Animation. Based on a book by Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson, the film apparently follows “three young wizard apprentices who, after being whisked away by an evil queen, must rely on their animal companions, or familiars – an alley cat, a blue jay and a tree frog – to escape.”
Personally, while it’s sad to see him leave Pixar, the premise itself sounds like an absolutely perfect one for the filmmaker, and I can’t help but be interested to see what he can do at and bring to SPA. Sam Raimi and Josh Donen will be producing the film, so talk about one hell of a pedigree. All signs point to this film being a winner, so hopefully it can live up to the immense hype.
