PRIVATE BENJAMIN remake to star Anna Faris
I’d like to start off with a short disclaimer. There are tons of 1980s comedies that are near and dear to my heart, but PRIVATE BENJAMIN is not one of them because I’ve never seen it. It’s probably required viewing for anyone who considers themselves well-versed in 80s movies, but I never made it priority.
Now it looks like we’re all about to get schooled in all things PRIVATE BENJAMIN, since that’s what usually happens when a classic movie gets a remake. The original film starred Goldie Hawn as the title character, a role that will be taken over by the beautiful Anna Faris.
In the original movie, Goldie starred as Judy Benjamin, who joins the Army after the tragic death of her husband during sex. Sounds hilarious already! The film was a big box office and critical success, earning some Oscar nominations, in part because of the way it tackled women’s issues.
That was in 1980 and I’d like to think women have come a long way since, but does that mean the remake has to be spineless and not tackle anything controversial? New Line seems to think so. Apparently, “Insiders say the studio doesn’t want to poke fun at the men and women in the service or take political potshots, but rather focus on the empowerment elements and build on the fish-out-of-water comedy.”
I sure hope the movie turns out to be a bit more interesting than a “girl power” story. Anna Faris is very talented and I think she could carry a comedy with more substance.
