JUSTICE LEAGUE

It's been back and forth. It's been up and down. The JUSTICE LEAGUE movie has been on and off again more times than Batman has brought up his dead parents, with a future more confusing than Robin's sexuality. So where is the film now? Producer Dan Lin recently gave somewhat of an update on the status of JUSTICE LEAGUE.

Lin confirmed that the film is still on hold for now, adding that his thoughts on the studio's possible strategy for the film.

"It seems like they’re (Warner Bros.) building to Justice League instead of going with the team movie first and doing individual movies after that."

Lin also confirmed that WB will be unveiling their strategy for their DC properties in January, potentially announcing a few new individual films for some of their characters. There was no mention of the JUSTICE LEAGUE's proposed style, as it was once said to be motion capture versus live-action.

So, all this really leads us to is more of the wait-and-see game. The good news out of this news is we may just be around the corner from getting a solid word on a BATMAN 3, another SUPERMAN, a WONDER WOMAN movie and, God-willing, a FLASH film.

To add my own commentary on the idea of a JUSTICE LEAGUE film, or team superhero films for that matter, I'm highly skeptical to say the least. To attempt to fit in numerous characters, all with their own strong personalities played by actors with their own strong personalities, seems like a cluster...well, you know. And would you even be able to get the actors to participate without their own respective directors? Christian Bale as Batman without Chris Nolan? Not sure Mr. Bale would go for that. Rumor is he can be a pretty strong-willed, stubborn guy...

However, DC does have a leg up with their franchise. While they may not be pumping out films like Marvel, they have a little bit more room to plan their major titles around a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie. Marvel already has the major players of The Avengers in production, in pre-production or already established with sequels on the way. Can you imagine Robert Downey Jr., Edward Norton, Chris Hemsworth, and whatever notable actors that are to play Captain America and Ant Man all in one movie? I'm sure you are saying yes right now, because on the surface the idea of it seems mind-blowingly awesome. But in reality, these are all actors playing characters from various director's visions. You can't shove them all in one film, directed by someone with a totally new take on who they have been in other film universes. Of course, Jon Favreau could be the one man for the job as he seems to have the balance and tone of a fun yet somewhat serious, action-filled comic book film down pat. Unfortunately, he's made it pretty clear that the only thing he wants to do with THE AVENGERS is produce. Unfortunately. Without him, I can't imagine this film working with a new director who's new to these character's and the Marvel universe.

Of course this is just my opinion formed out of speculation on the idea of the film. I'm still open to it being done, as if it could be pulled off, it would be truly epic. What do you think? JUSTICE LEAGUE and THE AVENGERS getting their owns films a good idea or a bad idea?

I feel like DC knows what they're doing as far as comic book adaptations. The JLA would be a difficult task, and I feel if you want something like that to work, you have to take the Marvel route and do individual character films first. This means you would have to cut the JLA in half because you can't have 11 origin stories.

We know Batman, we know Superman, and we'll get to know Green Lantern. You have to have Wonder Woman because there is no JLA without the Trinity (Bats, Supes, WW). You need The Flash because he's a key member … and everyone wants to see The Scarlet Speedster on the silver screen( say that 5x fast). The rest, though important, are interchangeable. I personally would like to see an Atom movie. I think WB is waiting to see how The Avengers will do. And like you said, I don't see Bale, Reynolds, and whoever else getting together to do a movie being their individual characters they've already portrayed in a universe where they are the ONLY superhero. Nolan would have to write in a Superman cameo in the third movie that leads Batman to the JLA . Green Lantern would need the same as well.

As far as the Avengers go, I don't what to expect. Marvel has not necessarily been on par with DC as far as comic book adaptations. Iron Man and Spider-Man has been their best so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing how Thor goes.

I feel like with HUGE projects like these, you need a HUGE director and a damn good writer. Speilberg should do the JLA movie and JJ Abrams should do the Avengers movie (sorry Michael Bay, you would just ruin them). And let's not forget my boy, Kevin Smith. He could write and direct the JLA movie (I feel like he knows the DC Universe a little better).

Yeah, I'd like to hope they know what they are doing but my first thought is the studio knows just what a huge box office draw this could be. I mean, who wouldn't flock to the theaters to see a film with even just Batman and Superman on screen together?

That's why I think the motion capture idea works best if it does at all. You don't have to worry about the egos of all the actors and the style could be determined from ground up VS some weirding melding of the style from 4-5comic book films under various directors.

As amazing as it would be to have Spielberg or Abrams helm an epic comic book film I'm not so sure I could see this happening. The problem with Smith, as amazing as a comic book writer he is, I'm not sure his style would transfer to film all that well. He's admitted this more than a few times and as we've seen with SUPERMAN and GREEN HORNET, he may just be destined for the page and not the screen in terms of comic books.

Whoever they get, let's hope it is someone that knows and cares about the universe of The Avengers and JLA.
