real steel

About this time last month, we brought you word of a film entitled REAL STEEL about a futuristic sport involving giant robots and boxing. Well, it appears that Touchstone Pictures is getting the gears moving on STEEL, as they have set the tentative release date for the film at November 18th, 2011. REAL STEEL will mark the first collaboration between Touchstone and the newly Disney-acquired DreamWorks.

Director Shawn Levy (NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM) is set to step into the ring to direct the film, based upon a short story by Richard Matheson (I AM LEGEND). Hugh Jackman has been confirmed to star in the film so, should that work out, I guess we'll see Wolvie go toe to toe with a robot after all. For all us X-MEN fans who like to pretend X3 did not exist, this is a dream come true.

Jackman will actually play a former boxer who has one last chance to be a champion by pairing up with his estranged son in order to train a robot to fight in the Real Steel World Championship. Not to be confused with my student documentary REEL STEEL, about the subgenre of romantic comedies set in steel mills.
