Reboot of THE MUMMY on its way thanks to PROMETHEUS scribe Jon Spaihts
There are franchises that are ripe for a reboot, and then there is THE MUMMY. Best known as a Brendan Fraser vehicle, it appears as though Universal just can’t get enough of this billion dollar film series.
Variety is reporting that the studio has tapped PROMETHEUS scribe Jon Spaihts to pen a reboot of the franchise. Spaihts seems excited about the prospect of a new take on the classic monster saying, “I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with PROMETHEUS to go back to a franchise’s roots in dark, scary source material and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven’t seen before.”
Personally, while I haven’t seen PROMETHEUS obviously, the idea of a dark reboot of THE MUMMY is really enticing. It has the makings of a great thriller, but was instead made into a dull and uninteresting adventure franchise. Hopefully Spaihts is the right guy to take on this project. It has to be better than his work on THE DARKEST HOUR, at least, right?
