Relativity sets a release date for Tarsem’s SNOW WHITE
March 2012 just got a bit more intense, particularly the week of March 16. The weekend already boasts the release of 21 JUMP STREET and the upcoming Mark Wahlberg thriller CONTRABAND, and now, thanks to Relativity, it also marks the debut of Tarsem’s upcoming film SNOW WHITE.
Originally slated to debut on June 29, 2012, the film stars Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer, Lily Collins, Nathan Lane and Robert Emms, and will go head to head during the 2012 release slate with Universal’s attempt at the story, SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN. This move comes only a week after Universal announced that HUNTSMAN was going to be moving up to June 1, making it appear as though the two studios are engaged in a bit of a pissing contest, with the lucky studio looking as though it’s Relativity.
Now, while I’m definitely interested in this project, a production cycle of less than ten months is absolutely insane. It seems to be too rushed a production cycle for a film from a director who is wholly a visual filmmaker. Tarsem is a wonderful visualist, but given a massively tight production schedule, this really has no hopes of being anything other than absolutely a mess.
The studio will also be releasing Phillip Noyce’s HUNTER KILLER on December 21, 2012. Just so you know.
