The Sundance hit arrives in limited release on October 21

As several stories this week have proven, it’s never too early for studios and distributors to make strategies for the awards season. On that note, Rope of Silicon relays a change in the release date for Sean Durkin’s Sundance favorite MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, which will be distributed through Fox Searchlight.

The indie drama, which stars Academy Award nominee John Hawkes and breakout star Elizabeth Olsen, will now hit theaters in limited release on October 21 instead of the initially stated October 7.

What’s up with the change? Well, George Clooney’s politically tinged THE IDES OF MARCH also hits theaters on October 7. That film will get a nationwide release, so there won’t be direct competition in the limited release circuit, but both films are titles that will be pushed for awards in the coming months.

The following weekend sees the limited release of Sony Pictures Classics’ TAKE SHELTER, yet another film that has Oscar buzz, mainly for Michael Shannon’s leading performance. Fellow Sundance hit LIKE CRAZY, with a buzzed-about performance from Felicity Jones, has a limited debut on the last weekend of the month.

October 21, though, is an ideal October date for MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE to hit. There isn't too much on the limited release front aside from the thriller MARGIN CALL and Kevin Smith’s RED STATE, neither of which look to contend for too many major awards.
