Release date updates: AVATAR 2 likely missing 2014; MORTAL INSTRUMENT gets a date

With his iconic yet much polarizing romance epic TITANIC on its way back to theaters this week in 3D, James Cameron is once again back in the headlines, a place the director both knows well and absolutely adores.

Recently heading his way down to the deepest part of the ocean by himself for an upcoming 3D documentary, it appears as though his long talked about sequel, AVATAR 2, may have taken a back seat.

Empire recently chatted with Cameron’s right hand man, producer partner and bunk buddy Jon Landau, who revealed that the film will likely miss a 2014 release date.  Saying that the first film came out one year after it was originally slated, this isn’t a shocking move though it’s definitely interesting to see where Cameron’s priorities lie.  Perhaps those priorities have less to do with films that will make him massive amounts of money and more in those that will broaden his scope.

In other release date news, the MORTAL INSTRUMENTS has been nabbed by Sony, with a release slated for August 23, 2013.  The film is based on Cassandra Clare’s novel, and will star Lily Collins as a teen who discovers that she’s part of a group of humans enhanced with angel blood in order to fight horrible monsters. Color this writer intrigued. (Source BOM / Deadline)
