UPDATE: RESTLESS and KUNG FU PANDA 2 heading to Cannes
UPDATE: The Festival de Cannes announced the lineup early this morning and KUNG FU PANDA 2 is not on the list. -Chase
With only 24 hours from now until the reveal of the full lineup for this year’s Cannes Film Festival, two more pictures have joined films like THE TREE OF LIFE and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, and what a weird combo it is.
First, after much speculation, Gus Van Sant will indeed be bringing his long-awaited RESTLESS to the Croisette, and will be opening the festival’s Un Certain Regard section. With a focus on “original and different” cinema, Van Sant’s film about a woman who falls for a young man who likes to attend funerals and has a ghost of a Japanese kamikaze pilot for a best friend fits that billing rather well.
The film stars Mia Waskiowska and Henry Hooper, and is set to bow theatrically thanks to Sony Pictures Classics later this year, but will be making its premiere at the festival after being pulled from its original January release. Van Sant himself is no newbie to the festival, having won the top prize for his 2003 masterpiece ELEPHANT, so this is an interesting addition, if one that’s not wholly shocking.
In the shocking category however, Thompson On Hollywood is reporting that KUNG FU PANDA 2 is set to unspool at the festival, adding to the fest’s ever-growing slate of A-list blockbusters, bringing names like Angelina Jolie, Jack Black, and Jackie Chan to the iconic red carpet.
Stay tuned, the full list will be announced on Thursday.
