Though it's never truly surprising when a performer attempts a crossover to another type of entertainment, I am a bit shocked that music's reigning superstar (move over, Lady GaGag, move over! Your Kermit the Frog ear muffs are stabbing me in the eye!), Rihanna, has chosen her feature film debut. And it's - Peter Berg's BATTLESHIP? Is this a musical now? No? Because I could see Ri-ri busting some serious moves on a battleship with guns blazing behind her, but I guess that is simply not to be.

Variety reports that Rihanna will star with Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood) and Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights, X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE) in Berg's take on Hasbro's "naval combat board game." Skarsgard and Kitsch are set to play brothers in the film, and the addition of the lovely Rihanna means only one thing - love triangle! God knows, I love my board game adaptations with a hearty dose of romantic drama. I will sink your battleship and claim your woman! Wait, is that how this game works?

In BATTLESHIP, Kitsh will play a naval officer who helps lead the resistance against "a superior force" that is attempting to overtake the Earth. I continue to not understand what this has to do with a board game that takes place on paper. Call me unimaginative.

The film already has a May 25, 2012 release date. The script was first penned by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber, with other drafts and revisions by Brian Koppelman and David Levien.
