Robert Pattinson lands lead role in David Cronenberg’s COSMOPOLIS adaptation

This comes as a bit of a surprise.

Robert Pattinson (yes, everyone, Edward Cullen) has just landed the lead role in David Cronenberg's film adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel, Cosmopolis. Colin Farrell was previously attached to the role. Fans of DeLillo and Cronenberg can start widening their eyes and dropping their jaws right about now.

Pattinson will play Eric Packer, "a financial wunderkind [who] risks his entire fortune to bet against the yen on a tumultuous day. His deed puts him in the crosshairs for assassination in a drama that is a study of capitalism in a slightly futuristic metropolis." But what's most interesting about the plot is that the majority of it takes place in Packer's souped-up and tricked-out limo as he goes about his day, a day that also includes a number of traffic jams and no less than two stalkers. Oh, and women, lots of women. It's like SOMEWHERE meets COLLATERAL meets AMERICAN PSYCHO with less fame, less death, and more ennui.

COSMOPOLIS will mark only the second direct adaptation of DeLillo's many works (the first being last year's END ZONE, with Josh Hartnett and Sam Rockwell). Other names attached to the film include Marion Cotillard and Paul Giamatti.

Reportedly, Pattinson chose the role because he is "a big fan of Cronenberg's work and an admirer of DeLillo's books." If so, the kid's got taste.

Interestingly enough, we saw some early promo art for the film back in May that included not only a glimpse at that limo, but also Farrell and Cotillard's name as topliners. Guess they'll need to change that.

    Congrats Rob!

I think he’ll do great in this movie, so you can close your mouth now; no need to look like a cod fish. He was excellent in Remember Me, and obviously wants to break out of the Twilight Saga thing. Give him a chance; I’m excited to see this.
