Robert Zemeckis will direct FLIGHT for Paramount

While it’s been a while since he’s helmed a live action project, director Robert Zemeckis appears to be filling his slate with them.

Along with the upcoming film FLIGHT, THR is reporting that Zemeckis is in talks to lead the upcoming film, MAJOR MATT MASON, with the outlet also stating that Tom Hanks is set to star.

Hanks and Zemeckis would be reteaming for the first time since THE POLAR EXPRESS, and the first time since CAST AWAY in the world of live-action. The film will follow the story of Major Matt Mason, a beloved Mattel astronaut toy, and will feature a screenplay from Hanks and writer Graham Yost.

Personally, this sounds like the weakest of Zemeckis’ possible projects. Films like REPLAY and TIMELESS sound much more intriguing, as does FLIGHT, but then again, I haven’t been excited for a Zemeckis film in what feels like ages. That all said, it will be really interesting to see what Zemeckis will be like as a director moving out of his recent animation phase. Hopefully it will be a new era for the director.
