Roland Emmerich to helm WHITE HOUSE DOWN
Roland Emmerich doing an action thriller with a horribly ridiculous title? Who would have thunk it?
That’s right, after taking on the conspiracy drama/costume piece ANONYMOUS, Emmerich is heading back to his comfort zone as, according to Deadline, he is tapped to helm a new project entitled WHITE HOUSE DOWN.
Penned by James Vanderbilt, the film was picked up by Sony Pictures for the monster price of $3 million. WHITE HOUSE DOWN will follow the story of a “paramilitary takeover of the White House,” with comparisons to DIE HARD not being all that far off.
Now, I’m of two minds about this project. First, anything Emmerich does is oddly uninteresting to me. Despite his gaudy style, his action is often uninspired and truly “fake” looking, so the idea of him doing a project like this doesn’t get the juices going. However, Vanderbilt is one hell of a writer (he did write ZODIAC after all) and with THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN on the way, he’ll be an even hotter name.
Here’s to hoping that this could be the project to finally prove that Emmerich is actually a director worth his weight in celluloid.
