Ron Howard takes over for Paul Greengrass on RUSH
Can Paul Greengrass just choose a damn project already?
After jumping out of the director’s chair on both THE FANTASTIC VOYAGE and CLEOPATRA, and while he waits to get a green light for his long talked about film MEMPHIS, Greengrass has left yet another project. However, it’s not a vacant director’s chair.
The LA Times is reporting that Greengrass has departed from a film entitled RUSH, which found the director packaged in just around a month ago. The film is a Formula One racing project, that will tell the story of the “rivalry between the late playboy British driver James Hunt and his nemesis, Austrian champion Niki Lauda.” However, the outlet also reveals that the film is now being shopped around Hollywood with one Ron Howard attached.
Peter Morgan is penning the script, which would re-team the writer and director pair for the first time since their film FROST/NIXON. Now, while that sounds promising, and it really does, it’s hard to get too excited for a new film from the man who gave us THE DA VINCI CODE and THE DILEMMA. That said, I do think that a racing film like this could be really interesting. I just wish it was coming to us from someone other than Howard.
