Ron Howard to direct SPY VS. SPY for Warner Bros.
In a puzzling development, it looks like the popular comic strip Spy vs. Spy will be coming to the big screen thanks to Warner Bros. Deadline Hollywood reports that Ron Howard will be at the helm of this live-action action comedy based on the comic from Madmagazine. Howard will also team up with David Koepp and Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer to handle production duties.
At the moment, the film’s comedy is being described as “physical and highly visual.” In other words, we can expect lots of uninspired slapstick and perhaps some toilet humor as well. There’s no word on the casting just yet, but comedy mainstays like Adam Sandler and Vince Vaughan could emerge as candidates for the two leading roles.
The sketch comedy series MADtv occasionally ran animated shorts derived from the popular comic. They were short, sweet, to the point, and – most importantly – genuinely funny. I doubt that too many sides were split as they played, but they were at least good for a laugh or two. Unfortunately, I can’t imagine how a translation to live-action could be anything but disastrous.
What are your thoughts on this adaptation of the comic Spy vs. Spy?
