The Wrap is reporting that Ryan Gosling is currently in talks to join Disney’s THE LONE RANGER. He would star opposite Johnny Depp as Tonto, with Gore Verbinski directing. It’s still very early in the process, so this is very tentative.

Ryan Gosling’s involvement hinges on whether he can fit this in with the projects he’s already committed to. He’s signed on to be the lead in the sci-fi remake LOGAN’S RUN, which films this fall, and has been offered a role in THE GANGSTER SQUAD along with Sean Penn.

THE LONE RANGER could be Disney’s next PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN-style franchise. With Jerry Bruckheimer, Gore Verbinski, and Johnny Depp attached, it’s an easy comparison to make. Plus, this property comes with a built-in franchise, having been a part of America’s lore dating back to the radio serial days. It started as a radio serial in the 1930s, then became a television series starring Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels from 1949 to 1957. It then lived on in a series of films and television mini-series, the most recent being a 2003 made-for-TV movie airing on The WB starring Chad Michael Murray, which served as a failed pilot to series. This project would bring this venerable character out of the dregs of second rate television and could be the next big live-action hit for Disney.

THE LONE RANGER is scheduled to be released in 2014.
