Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" is one of my favorite songs of all time. The song has been used in more films than I can count and it is high time that Mr. Cooke himself was the subject of a feature film. ABKCO Music & Records, Cooke's recording label, seems to thinks so as well and is developing a script for a biopic of the singer's life based on the 2005 Peter Guralnick biography, "Dream Boogie: The Triumph of Sam Cooke," an exhaustively comprehensive book that covers the singer's entire life, including his career and private matters.

For now, ABKCO is keeping tight-lipped on the project until more details are available, as the scope and focus of the film is still unclear. "In the next couple of months, I should be able to make an announcement on the film," ABKCO president Jody Klein, whose father managed Cooke, told Reuters. Cooke's life has all the drama necessary for a compelling film. Like Ray Charles, whose biopic RAY won countless awards, he managed to transition from gospel music to achieve mainstream pop success. He was a savvy businessman and owned the rights to his music through various recording and publishing entities he controlled. His hits included "Chain Gang," "Cupid," "Good Times," "Twistin' the Night Away," and "You Send Me," as well as the protest song "A Change Is Gonna Come," which was released after his death.

Cooke was 33 when he died in a Los Angeles motel in 1964, where he was shot by a motel manager who said she feared for her life after he stormed into her office after a dispute with a woman he had brought back to his room.
