Sam Raimi The Great and Powerful Oz

The big time announcements continue to be rolling in this week, leaving us all to wonder, what the hell will be left come Thursday and Friday?

Today we have confirmation, thanks to The Playlist, that director Sam Raimi will indeed be helming the upcoming Disney film, OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, which he has been connected to since this past summer. Hit the jump for the full story.

The film will be penned by RABBIT HOLE scribe David Lindsay-Abaire, which may seem odd, but Lindsay-Abaire has penned a few films prior such as ROBOTS and INKHEART, as well as some of the later drafts of Raimi’s take on SPIDER-MAN 4.

Personally, while I’m massively interested in seeing Raimi’s take on a WIZARD OF OZ prequel, the addition of Lindsay-Abaire penning the screenplay has me so intrigued by this project, that it’s one I can’t wait to check out. The film will star Robert Downey Jr, which is close to actually being confirmed, and with the film ready to shoot in 2011, this may be closer than we originally thought.

However, it’s not clear when the film will shoot, as Downey Jr. has his fair share of commitments like THE AVENGERS and GRAVITY, both shooting in 2011.
