Screen Gems to release ATTACK THE BLOCK in the U.S.
My day has been made.
Sony’s Screen Gems division has acquired the U.S. distribution rights for Joe Cornish’s stunning debut, ATTACK THE BLOCK.
The film tells the story of a young gang in England who team up with a woman they just mugged in order to fend off an alien invasion. ATTACK premiered at the SXSW Film Festival, where it received rave reviews, including one from this site. Even with the strong word of mouth surrounding the film, distributors were wary about picking it up due to the thick accents and supposed limited appeal of a foreign monster movie to American audiences.
Clint Culpepper, head of Screen Gems, talks about the company’s new acquisition:
“Steve Bersch screened this film for me and I fell completely in love with it. The film is, at once, charming, scary, funny, hip, clever and completely hits its mark. I hope this is the beginning of a long relationship with these incredibly talented filmmakers.”
ATTACK is all the adjectives that Culpepper used to describe it, and I hope it becomes a DISTRICT 9-esque surprise hit. It is more than just a great monster movie; it’s a great movie, period.
