Now that we finally have our Captain America in Chris Evans, you can expect all sorts of casting news surrounding the film's secondary characters to come out of the woodwork. Take for instance this latest news. Sebastian Stan (Gossip Girl, HOT TUB TIME MACHINE) has been cast as Cap's sidekick, James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, signing a 5-6 picture deal. Interestingly enough, Stan initially auditioned for the role of Captain America. But I guess the fact that the guy hails from Romania could have detracted from the fact that the character is called Captain America.

For those of you familiar with the Barnes character's backstory, you know that Barnes was a teenage orphan who attempted to join the military but was turned away due to his young age. Instead, the boy became a sort of military mascot due to his family history which eventually led him to befriend Steve Rogers, subsequently discovering his alter ego of Captain America. From there, he joined the star-spangled hero's quest to rid the world of Nazi evil. Barnes played a large role in most of the Captain America comics, specifically the storyline of how the superhero becomes frozen in ice where he is found decades later by The Avengers.

As Heat Vision points out, the character was recently brought back from the dead in 2005 as the assassin Winter Soldier, but it is unknown at this time if Joe Johnston's version will include this story arc.

THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA begins shooting in Europe this summer with a release date set for July 22nd, 2011.

Now -he- looks like a Captain America! Though, sadly, I suppose his birthplace makes him ineligible… :(

Oh well, maybe he'll be like Sam Worthington in Terminator: Salvation and be the breakout star. *fingers crossed*

I with you Michael! Upon doing an image search for young Mr. Stan I found him to have a great resemblance to how I picture Cap. Although I am happy with the casting of Chris Evans…it could have been a lot worse…it could have been *gulp* John Krasinski! Though I would have loved to see Chris Pine toss the shield around.

I guess we should just be satisfied that Stan is in the film at all and that we skated by with an acceptable casting choice for our hero.
