Sequel news: KUNG FU PANDA 2 gets serious; STAR TREK 2 gets pre-production
Here’s an update on two highly anticipated sequels from Paramount Pictures: KUNG FU PANDA 2 and STAR TREK 2.
KUNG FU PANDA 2’s animators are touching up the film before its release on May 26. Melissa Cob (a producer of the film) talked about the film’s tone with The Hollywood Reporter:
"The movie deals with pretty tough, emotional issues that he goes through, as well as a huge adventure. This movie is on a much bigger scale then the first movie. It’s been much more ambitious and hard to make from a filmmaking standpoint…It really builds on what was set up in the first movie, and has Po struggling with bigger issues than he did the first time."
These issues could help KUNG FU PANDA 2 reach its potential as a masterpiece of animation filmmaking; I felt my lack of emotional involvement is what prevented the first PANDA from being a truly great film. Check out news on STAR TREK 2 after the break.
On the STAR TREK front, Paramount is already putting money in pre-production for the film even though a script has yet to be complete. The film (scheduled for a June 2012 release, apocalypse permitting) is also without a director, but it seems almost certain that J.J. Abrams will direct the sequel after finishing up SUPER 8.
I hope that both sequels outshine the originals, but this will be a tall order considering the success (both critically and commercially) that each film had. Which film are you more excited about?
