Seventh SAW flick now titled SAW 3D: THE TRAPS COME ALIVE
Update: Per Coming Soon, the film is still titled just SAW 3D, and the tagline "the traps come alive." This changes little for me.
There are few massive franchises that create such true ennui in me than the SAW franchise. While I found the first two flicks entertaining and inventive for their genre, the last four have bored me to tears. But the series has slowly turned itself into a bit of a yearly Halloween event, so why not just keep cranking them out? And, of course, it came as absolutely no surprise to anyone that the seventh film in the SAW franchise was going 3D. Frankly, I’m a little surprised that such a gimmick-fueled series had not gone to the third dimension previously.
But now we have the official title for the seventh SAW, and it changes things up a bit – SAW 3D: THE TRAPS COME ALIVE. Well, considering that over the course of six films, we’ve seen traps made from just about every combination and permutation of trap-building material you can think of, why not just let these things come alive? But can we just make them out of kittens and ponies? No? Fine. Rain on my parade.
The film will be directed by Kevin Greutert (who notoriously had to leave PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 to film SAW 3D, something he was none-too-pleased about at the time). Despite Greutert’s resistance to rejoin the franchise (he edited the first five SAW films), the director helmed SAW VI, which was met with significantly better reviews than the series had seen in quite some time, which signals that even when these traps “come alive,” it might not be the trainwreck film I’d otherwise anticipate. He is also reteamed with SAW VI writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan.
The film stars SAW alumni Tobin Bell, Cary Elwes, and Costas Mandylor. They will be joined by Sean Patrick Flannery and Gina Holden. Flannery will play Bobby Dagen, a former victim of Jigsaw who is now a “self-help guru” who brings together other survivors. Of course, there are “dark secrets” and “a deadly battle” ahead. And traps. That come alive. In 3D. Yawn.
